Ever since the early 1600s, when the first Europeans set foot on the peninsula that was to later become the City of Portland, the city’s social and economic history has been shaped by national and international events. Some of these events are very well-known while others have been mostly forgotten, but all of them have influenced the city in both tangible and intangible ways.

This book looks at the growth of Portland and provides the historical background to help explain why the city, and its diverse neighborhoods, developed the way they did. Photos, maps, and other archival evidence add richness to Portland Maine: Connections Across Time and give a whole new perspective on the urban environment.

Paul Ledman has always had a passion for history while following careers in geology, law, real estate and teaching. A New York City native, he has lived in Maine with his wife Colleen Myers for over 30 years. His prior books are A Maine Town Responds: Cape Elizabeth and South Portland in the Civil War and the best-selling Walking Through History: Portland Maine on Foot.
