This is a book of historical walking tours of Portland that makes connections between today’s urban landscape and much of the history that made Portland the city it is today. During its almost four hundred years of recorded history, Portland has seen economic boom times as well as war, massacres, economic downturns, riots, urban renewal and destructive fires. Every corner and every street has borne witness to some part of that story. Rarely are there outward signs to denote some long forgotten human drama or event. References to the historical context are even more rare. This book, full of photos and illustrations, brings the city’s history to life in ways that are as appealing for residents as for visitors.

One of author Paul Ledman’s passions has always been history, even though he’s also pursued careers in geology, law, real estate and teaching. A New York City native, Ledman’s prior book is A Maine Town Responds: Cape Elizabeth and South Portland in the Civil War. His newest book, Portland, Maine: Connections Across Time will be available Spring 2023.
